On November 30, 2007, AcademyHealth convened a high level invitational summit to assess the size, composition and capacity of the current health services research (HSR) workforce and to consider future workforce needs as they relate to the challenge of generating the evidence needed to improve the performance of the nation's health care system. The summit, supported by RWJF and AHRQ, brought together 50 educators, students, employers and funders of (HSR) in a consultative process to consider three commissioned papers that looked at trends in the education, the size and composition of the field and the demand for health services researchers in the workplace. Summit participants recognized that while there is complexity in defining the workforce parameters, t he strong growth in its size suggests that forty years after its founding, the time is right for a thoughtful reassessment of the field.
