The Deputy Director will assume a senior role in the management of the National Program Office (NPO), working closely with the Program Director, Michael Yedidia, Ph.D., to develop and implement a four-year national initiative to fund evaluations of innovations that address the consequences of the nurse faculty shortage by increasing teaching productivity and/or improving faculty work-life, recruitment or retention. The initiative is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Deputy Director will participate in developing the initiative's strategy, policies, budgets, work and communications plans while managing day-to-day program operations.

Key elements of the position include collaborating on program design, grants management and monitoring, coordinating National Advisory Committee activities, overseeing technical assistance, assuring that program activities are well coordinated and consistent with Center, Institute and University administrative functions, serving as primary liaison between the Foundation and the grantee sites and promoting communications through electronic and print media.

The Deputy Director will work under the general direction and supervision of Michael Yedidia, NPO Director, and will provide leadership and supervision to project team members, consultants and vendors.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Creates strategic plan with Program Director to include the development and management of policy, grantmaking and budgets
  • Creates and oversees program's operating structure in close consultation with the Program Director and Center management
  • Works with Foundation communications staff to design and implement communications strategy
  • Coordinates and monitors provision of evaluation assistance to grantees
  • Works with NPO staff to manage all components of the annual grantee meetings
  • Works with Director to advance the field by networking, coordinating and promoting NPO activities with other national organizations, interested parties and partners
  • Represents the program and promotes the work of the NPO and grantees at selected national forums, conferences and meetings
  • Coordinates activities of National Advisory Committee
  • Ensures compliance with all grant-related reporting requirements, including both financial and narrative progress reports

Qualifications:
Requires a Master's degree in nursing, public health, public policy or a related field with a minimum of three years of experience in program management, preferably in the health field. Advanced degree and five years experience preferred. Requires knowledge or interest in nursing education, expertise or interest in program evaluation and proven management, organizational, fiscal and analytic skills. Must have excellent oral and written communications skills, including public speaking and presentation; excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to problem-solve and resolve conflicts effectively; demonstrated ability to take initiative and implement a strategic work plan; and ability to work with diverse populations and staff. Travel will be required.

The Center for State Health Policy, a unit of the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research at Rutgers University, serves the health policy needs of New Jersey and other states. More than 20 faculty and research staff from diverse disciplines work on a wide range of research, policy analysis and related projects related to health and health care policy.
